How to Optimise Your Google Business Profile for More Local Enquiries

Google is a big deal. Everyone uses it to find stuff nearby, like when you're suddenly craving pizza at 9 pm on a Tuesday (no judgment!).

But did you know that having a Google Business Profile can seriously up your chances of being found when people search for businesses like yours? It's a free shop window on the biggest high street in the world.

What is a Google Business Profile?

Think of it like your business's personal space on Google. It's that handy box that pops up on the right when you search for a local shop, restaurant, or, well, anything.

It shows all the need-to-know info: your opening hours, address, website, customer reviews, and even photos.  It's important for showing up in those "near me" searches, and honestly, it can make a real difference to how many people walk through your door (or visit your website).

How Do I Make the Most of My GBP?

You need to claim your profile if you haven't already. It's easy, just head over to Google My Business and follow the steps.

Fill It Out, and Fill It Out Well

This might seem obvious, but you'd be surprised how many businesses miss this step. Make sure every single section is complete and accurate. That means your business name, address, phone number, website and opening hours.

Oh, and don't forget to add some lovely photos. Show off your office, shop or location, your products, your team, and anything that gives people a feel for your business.

Pick the Perfect Categories

Google uses categories to understand what your business is all about, so choose wisely.

Be specific, but not too niche. If you run a café that also sells amazing homemade cakes, you might choose "Café" as your primary category and "Bakery" as a secondary one.

Don't Forget the "From the Business" Section

This is your chance to sell yourself. Write a short and snappy description of your business, highlighting what makes you special.

What are your unique selling points? What kind of experience can customers expect?  Keep it concise and engaging, no one wants to wade through a wall of text.

Keep Your Profile Fresh

Just like your shop window, your Google Business Profile needs regular updates to stay looking its best.  Add new photos, update your opening hours if they change (especially important around holidays!), and post regularly to keep things interesting. You can share news, offers, events, anything that's going on in your business.

Encourage Those Reviews

Reviews are gold dust! They build trust and credibility, and they can really influence people's decisions.  Don't be shy about asking happy customers to leave a review, you can even make it super easy by sending them a direct link.

And remember to respond to all reviews, good and bad, to show you're engaged and care about your customer's feedback.

Answer Questions Before They're Asked

The Q&A section is a great way to pre-empt common queries. Think about the questions customers often ask and provide clear, helpful answers.  This saves everyone time and makes your business look super organised.

Here are a few extra tips to make your profile shine:

Use keywords naturally

Don't try to stuff your profile with keywords, it'll just look spammy. Instead, focus on writing naturally and using relevant terms that people might search for.

Keep an eye on your insights

Google provides useful data about how people find and interact with your profile. Use this information to see what's working and what could be improved.

Consider using Google Posts

These are like mini-updates that appear directly on your profile. They're a great way to share news, offers, or events with potential customers.

Make sure your website is mobile-friendly. Many people search on their phones, so your website must look good on all devices.

Getting your Google Business Profile in tip-top shape doesn't have to be a chore. With a little effort, you can make it a powerful tool for attracting local customers and growing your business.
